I recently observed a mom and her 15 month old daughter. They were at an event in which a number of vendors were present. The mother visited my booth as she had seen my display of children’s books. We chatted briefly and they continued on their way. The floor was covered in sand and the precious girl squatted down to touch the dirt after which she looked at her mother and back to her hand. The mother was only able to walk a few steps when this darling stooped down to touch the dirt. The mother was patient and gave her daughter the time and support as appropriate. There was no reason not to let her explore. They finally made it around the arena without a fuss. As they went the mother visited with the vendors and gently guided the precious girl. I was struck because I think that too often we hurry children and by doing so are we not taking precious learning away from them? How do you support your child?
